We’re thrilled to announce our expanded dental hygiene offerings at our Auckland dental clinic, designed to help you achieve healthier gums, brighter smiles, and better overall health. With a focus on prevention and gum health, our dedicated Dental Hygienist provides tailored care that complements your dentist’s work, ensuring your oral and general health are in the best hands.

Dental hygiene is a specialised service

A dental hygienist specialises in keeping your smile in top condition through preventive care by focusing on creating a stable foundation for your teeth—healthy gums. This involves services like cleaning, scaling, root planing, personalised oral care advice, and regular maintenance to keep everything in balance.

Healthy gums are essential for long-term oral health. They provide the foundation for strong teeth, reduce the risk of issues like tooth decay or sensitivity, and even contribute to a brighter, whiter smile. Research also shows that maintaining good gum health can positively impact your overall health by reducing inflammation linked to heart disease, respiratory conditions, and pregnancy-related complications. By investing in gum health, you’re making a choice for your overall wellbeing.

Hygiene cleans go beyond a standard clean with your dentist. While a dentist focuses on overall oral health, our hygienist provides specialised gum care that’s tailored to your specific needs. They use advanced techniques to thoroughly clean below the gumline and around tooth roots, ensuring no area is left untreated. Our hygienist can address moderate gum health concerns, using non-surgical methods to halt the progression of gum disease and reducing the risk of needing specialist periodontal surgical intervention.

Our three levels of hygiene care

We understand that every patient’s needs are different, so we offer three distinct hygiene services:

Routine maintenance clean

Ideal for patients with good oral health, this six-monthly service prevents plaque and tartar buildup, reduces staining, and leaves your teeth smooth and polished. Routine cleans help you maintain fresh breath, healthy gums, and a brighter smile while catching early signs of dental concerns.

Comprehensive clean

For patients with more complex needs or heavy buildup, this service goes deeper, providing a more intensive cleaning. It’s perfect for maintaining stability in your gums and teeth, preventing gum disease, and addressing issues like bleeding gums or bad breath.

Deep perio clean

Designed for patients with gum disease or advanced periodontal issues, this comprehensive service includes scaling, root planing, and periodontal charting under local anaesthetic. It helps resolve infection, reduce gum inflammation, and prevent further bone loss or tooth mobility.

You can book any of these hygiene appointments with us online here.

What you can expect from a hygiene appointment

Regular dental hygiene appointments provide more than just a cleaner smile—they’re key to maintaining optimal oral and general health. Here’s what you can expect:

Healthier gums and teeth

Deep cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline, preventing gum disease and helping your gums reattach to your teeth. This stabilises your teeth and reduces the risk of tooth loss.

Improved overall health

Gum disease has been linked to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. By keeping your gums healthy, you reduce your body’s inflammatory response and support your overall health.

Visibly better smile

Scaling and polishing remove surface stains, leaving your teeth whiter and your smile more confident.

Reduced pain and sensitivity

Regular maintenance can prevent the need for more invasive procedures and ensure your gums remain healthy and pain-free. Deep perio cleans can also resolve localised gum infections, reducing pain and swelling.

How often you should see the Hygienist

Regularly getting hygiene cleans is the best way to maintain your oral health. We recommend getting a routine hygiene clean every six months to keep your smile looking great and prevent oral health problems before they become bigger, more painful, and more expensive to treat. Regular cleanings mean:

  • A smoother, fresher mouth with less tartar and plaque buildup.

  • Better tracking of your oral health progress, including identifying changes due to diet or home care habits.

  • Easier appointments, as new buildup is easier to remove.

A healthy mouth needs daily care

Good oral hygiene does not stop at the clinic. It’s important that you look after your dental health daily by:

  1. Brushing twice a day in the morning and before bed using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for two minutes, making sure to clean all sides of your teeth. Make sure to hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and brush in small, circular motion. Make sure to replace your toothbrush every 3 months or less.

  1. Floss every day to clean between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. Take about 45cm of floss and wind it around your middle fingers, leaving about 5cm to work with and then gently slide the floss between each tooth and under the gumline using a fresh section of floss for each tooth.

  1. Rinse with antibacterial mouthwash to help reduce bacteria in your mouth, freshens breath, and reach areas that brushing and flossing may miss. Swish a mouthful for about 30 seconds after brushing and flossing and avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes afterwards to let the mouthwash work.
