Our sedation services
Nitrous oxide sedation
Relaxed, lighter calm
Nitrous oxide is a gentle, effective way to reduce anxiety during dental treatment. It helps you feel calm, floaty and relaxed, while remaining awake and responsive.
A mixture of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen is delivered to your nose using a breathing circuit. The procedure is non-intrusive and begins working within minutes.
Nitrous oxide sedation is ideal for:
-
Mild to moderate dental anxiety
-
Younger patients, including children
-
Short, straightforward procedures like cleans or fillings
The effects of nitrous oxide sedation wear off quickly, meaning you can usually drive yourself home after 30 minutes and get on with your day. It’s a great choice if you want a calm, comfortable experience without the downtime from deeper sedation.
IV (intravenous) sedation
Deeper, stronger relaxation
IV sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation and is an excellent option if you experience more significant anxiety or require a longer, more complex procedure.
Medication is delivered through a small needle, and most patients describe it as feeling like time has passed in a blur, often without remembering much of the treatment.
IV sedation is suitable for:
-
High dental anxiety or dental phobia
-
Complex or lengthy treatments
-
Patients who want the most stress-free experience possible
Full recovery from IV sedation usually takes at least a few hours. You’ll need someone to drive you home, and you’ll need to rest for the remainder of the day. For many patients, IV sedation makes complex and uncomfortable treatment much more accessible.
Understanding dental sedation
Dental sedation uses medication to help you feel calm and comfortable during your dental treatment. It’s designed to reduce anxiety, ease discomfort, and make your overall experience more positive, without putting you fully to sleep.
At Dentistry for Chickens, we offer two main types of sedation: nitrous oxide and intravenous (IV) sedation. Both allow you to remain conscious and able to respond to instructions, but in a deeply relaxed state.
This is different to general anaesthesia, which is performed in a hospital setting under the care of an anaesthetist. With general anaesthesia, you are completely unconscious and require breathing support. Dental sedation is a lighter, safer alternative that allows faster recovery, fewer side effects, and the ability to go home shortly after your appointment.
Sedation is suitable for many situations, from routine cleans to more complex dental work, and can make all the difference if you’ve been putting off treatment due to anxiety.
Benefits of sedation
Sedation dentistry can make your dental experience more comfortable, more efficient, and less stressful. Some of the benefits include:
-
Feeling calm and at ease throughout your appointment.
-
Reduced gag reflex, making treatment more comfortable.
-
Local anaesthetic often works more effectively when you’re relaxed.
-
Ability to complete multiple treatments in one appointment.
-
Less jaw soreness during and after longer procedures.
-
Helping you catch up on overdue treatment you’ve delayed because of anxiety.
-
Making complex or lengthy treatments feel quicker and easier.
By removing the barriers that anxiety or discomfort can create, sedation helps you get the dental care you need in a way that feels safe and manageable.
